Chiropractic care in pregnancy

PREGNANCY

Approach:

Chiropractic has an important role to play in the care of women both during and after pregnancy. At a time when the use of drugs is to be minimized, the Chiropractic approach is a logical way to help ease pain and discomfort, and promote the health and well being of the mother.

Signs and symptoms:

During pregnancy the mother’s spine can be responsible for backache, sciatica, headaches, and the symptoms of carpal tunnel.

Causes:

It is particularly common that Sacroiliac joint pain, felt in the lower back and buttocks, is experienced during pregnancy due to the stress of the extra weight of the unborn baby, and hormonal changes that make the pelvis suppler during the latter stages of pregnancy.

This may further increase the susceptibility of the spinal joints and supporting muscles and ligaments to sprains and strains. Pregnancy may create new problems, or exacerbate existing problems which were previously compensated for.

Diagnosis and treatment

Chiropractic can help during pregnancy by:

  1. Correcting abnormal joint mechanics that lead to joint and nerve stress, thus reducing pain and improving function.

  2. Maintaining joint function and spinal balance so the spine may adapt to the increased weight and altered posture.

  3. Ensuring that the joints of the lower back and pelvis are moving freely to assist the birth process. Proper joint movement enhances pelvic opening.

  4. Educating the expectant mother on correct posture, lifting and other lifestyle factors in order to reduce spinal stress.
