Obesity & Poor Sleep

George Hardas

Disrupted sleep or sleep deprivation affects:

  1. growth hormone – controls body fat and muscle

  2. production of leptin hormone – tells body when it should feel full

  3. secretion of cortisol  –  stress hormone causing high calorie cravings

  4. reduced daytime physical activity including natural movement and fidgeting

  5. NSF study – 1/4 adults ate more than usual following night of inadequate sleep.
